Spices 101


  1. The most puzzling thing about Indian cooking can be its spices. This class demystifies popular Indian spices and shows you how to use them in Indian dishes or how to vary your own repertoire with a dash of cumin or a hint of asafetida.

Exploring the Indian Kitchen

  2. Discover the staple ingredients of an Indian kitchen as you learn the secrets of making your own ghee, whipping up home-made lassi and delving into the mysteries of the Indian Spice Box. Cook a complete, organic Indian meal from rice and veggies to chutneys and raita in this introductory class.

  2. For all you carnivores out there. Go beyond tandoori to explore some of India’s flavorful meat and seafood dishes: from spicy stir-fries to tangy stews and coastal India’s coconutty delicacies.

Holiday Spice, Summer Edition

  2. Join us for our summer edition of Holiday Spice as we make flavorful hot weather condiments and treats from scratch and enjoy some aromatic snacks and spiced chai (or wine) while we cook. This is a great date night class. Meet a friend after work, cook together and leave with edible proof of what you learnt! Get into the spirit of summer as you whip up your own spice blends and barbeque sauces to gift to your favorite foodies. You will learn how to blend different spices into unique “masalas” and fresh condiments that you can use with Indian and Western meals. Take away 5 gift tins of masala and 5 jars of condiments (cilantro chutney, fresh mango pickle, etc) as well as recipe-card gift tags and a folder of the recipes you made.

  1. All classes are held at Surfas Restaurant and Gourmet Food in Culver City (see below for map), unless noted otherwise.

  2. 20 students maximum per class.

  3. 12 students minimum per class.

  4. We reserve the right to cancel or reschedule a class if 12 students have not signed up. If a session is cancelled, you will be accommodated at the next available session.

  5. Reservations are on a first come, first serve basis.

  6. Payments can be made using Paypal for all posted classes. Payments can also be made by check - email us for more information.

  7. Cancelations can only be made more than 1 week before the class. Cancelations made within 1 week of a class cannot be refunded unless we are able to fill your spot. Cancelations are subject to a $5 processing fee to cover paypal/check mailing charges.

  8. Classes may not be rescheduled more than twice.
